Solera DeepSee Forensics Suite: Where web searching meets active network forensics.
A conversation between James HIlliard, host of the See Everything, Know Everything podcast, and Matthew Wood, Solera Networks’ Chief Scientist.
“DeepSee is a tool that provides administrators, users and even C-level people at a corporation a way to see what happened on a network as it is happening or in the past without needing to know what a packet is or what a MAC address is or how IP addresses work.”

Digital forensics focuses on acquiring access to static storage media, like a hard drive, network storage drive, CD, flash drive, computer memory, etc., and then interrogating it to uncover evidence of activity by a user. Digital forensics focuses on data-at-rest. What’s missing is the communication that may have traveled across the network, the transient data that may not find a static resting place. Network forensics focuses on interrogating data-in-motion. Listen to Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks, shed light on how network forensics becomes a powerful tool to be prepared for the unknowns.

Your network security tools will fail. We shouldn’t be surprised that the tools we seem to rely on to protect our digital assets will fail at some point. They don’t have the capability to recognize the “unknowns,” nothing can.
As we annually spend billions in security tools, it’s easy to feel let down. We need to start accepting failure and plan for quick detection, mitigation and recovery from an unexpected security event.
Alan Hall, Solera Networks Marketing Director, elaborates on why we need to change our thinking towards network security tools in this podcast.

Cal-Ore, a regional telephone company and ISP in Northern California, needed to find a solution to become CALEA compliant. Third party providers, TTPs, were asking up to $200,000 for a solution and wouldn’t provide any added benefit of monitoring Calore’s network traffic to allow them to improve performance and service to their customers.
It chose the Solera Network’s Deep Packet Capture and Stream Storage Appliance, because it provides dual purpose of capturing and storing all network traffic to perform historical analysis and also the primary function of becoming CALEA compliant. Only Solera Networks provides a positive ROI.

Skyriver Incorporated, a broadband wireless carrier from San Diego was faced with the impending CALEA deadline. They needed a solution that would make them compliant to this government mandate requiring them to be able to tap anything that passes over their network.
“We had wanted a hunting knife and we ended up getting a Swiss Army knife that was really going to handle a lot more of our day to day networking needs than being a dumb box that just sat there waiting for a specific request that may never come.”
-Brad Slavin, VP of Engineering and Network Operations at Skyriver Incorporated
