Industry veteran brings unique experience in addressing emerging needs in security

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — September 1, 2009 – Solera Networks, the leading provider of network forensics products and services, announced today the appointment of Scott Weiss to its board of directors. He recently left Cisco, where he was the Vice President and General Manager of the Security Technology Business Unit.

“While there are many interesting start-ups in the network security space today, Solera Networks’ technology is some of the most interesting I’ve seen in years and the management team has the strength and experience to make this company a huge winner,” said Weiss. “The opportunity to work with the team and provide guidance from my experience at Cisco and IronPort led me to join the board.”

Solera Networks will leverage Weiss’ proven experience in developing strong growth strategies for emerging companies. Weiss has served at many notable technology firms including Hotmail, EDS and idealab!. He was one of the early members of the Hotmail team, where he was responsible for all revenue generating business development activities and partnerships. Weiss stayed with the company after the acquisition by Microsoft and led the MSN business development unit. After leaving MSN, Weiss went on to pursue new opportunities at idealab!, where he met Scott Banister, and together the two developed the technology that eventually became IronPort.

As CEO of IronPort Systems, Weiss established the company as the leader in email security and directed the company through its successful acquisition by Cisco. After the acquisition, Weiss advanced quickly inside Cisco to lead Cisco’s Security Technology Business Unit, developing the vision and strategy for integrating reputation-based security into existing products.

Solera Networks™ Secures $7M in New Funding to Grow Network Forensics Business, Allegis Capital Leads Round and Joins Board

New funding validates company’s objective of providing the missing link to a complete information assurance strategy.

LINDON, UT – April 15, 2009 – Solera Networks, a provider of innovative network forensics software solutions, today announced it has raised an additional $7 million in Series B venture funding, led by new investor Allegis Capital. Solera Networks’ existing investor, Canopy Ventures, is also participating in the round.

Proceeds from the funding will be used to accelerate growth in sales and marketing activities, including opening the company’s new office in Washington, DC and expansion of its Japanese operations.

Solera Networks president and CEO, Steve Shillingford said, “We’ve always believed that today’s information assurance strategies are missing a fundamental component – the ability to go back in time to quickly find the source of a breach, remediate the failure, and fortify the network. We see this funding as validation for the need to shift toward planning for these inevitable failures by investing in network forensics solutions like those from Solera Networks.”

Solera Networks has made significant advancements in high-speed network forensics solutions for both virtual and physical networks, including technology to capture, index, search, and replay all network traffic. The company’s solutions are unmatched in speed and scalability and have been previously demonstrated at Supercomputing ‘08 in a real-world testing lab involving live network traffic. Additionally, Solera Networks has certified its performance with Meircom and in numerous live customer deployments.

“We can expect to see more aggressive attacks targeting vulnerabilities that have been recently classified, but for which a remedy is still under development,” said Nick Selby, Vice President and Research Director of the Enterprise Security Practice at industry analyst firm The 451 Group. “Network forensics technologies, like those from Solera Networks, can replay past network events in full fidelity and help identify the scope of the exploit. Swift identification leads to protection against further exposure.” Solera Networks will showcase its latest solution at RSA in San Francisco, April 20-23.

“We are very pleased to join Allegis Capital in this second round of financing for Solera Networks,” said Ron Heinz, Managing Director of Canopy Ventures. “Solera Networks has combined a strong management team with excellent technology in the exciting growth market of network forensics. We believe their opportunity to serve customers in global markets is very compelling.”
“Despite best efforts to protect information assets, there will always be instances where predetermination and prevention isn’t possible,” said Spencer Tall, managing director of Allegis Capital. “Organizations must shift their focus to incident response, supported by comprehensive network forensics. Determining the scope of an event is key, followed by remediation and fortification. This is where Solera Networks’ open architecture, support for any network, and easy-to-use forensic applications fill the gap in today’s network security platforms. It’s a very exciting market opportunity.”

Spencer Tall and Robert Ackerman, managing director and Co-Founder from Allegis Capital, will join the Solera Networks Board of Directors.

Solera Networks’ growing customer base includes small businesses up to global 2000 enterprise and government entities.

Solera Networks is a Hot Company

Network Forensics Leader Joins Network Products Guide’s Winners Circle for 2009; Need for Network Forensics Underscored by Conficker

LINDON, UT – March 31, 2009

Solera Networks, a provider of innovative network forensics software and search appliances, today announced that it has been named a 2009 Hot Company by Network Products Guide, a leading technology solutions publication. The company’s president and CEO Steve Shillingford presented last week at the awards ceremony and 2009 Technosium World Executive Alliance Summit in San Francisco to an audience of industry and end-user executives, including Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs).

Solera Networks stood out from among the pool of applicants – a group that included established, international players of all sizes and industries – in particular, because of its accomplishments in the burgeoning field of network forensics. Solera Networks’ innovative set of network capture, search and regeneration technology fill a conspicuous gap in the current security tools landscape by addressing the often-overlooked incident response element of information assurance. Additionally, the company’s experienced executives, strategic product positioning, and standout revenue growth helped to secure the award.

The need for network forensics has never been more urgent, given the increasingly insidious nature and frequency of threats. As the most recently publicized threat from GhostNet cyber espionage and the purveyors of Conficker demonstrate, despite our best efforts as an industry, there will always be instances where predetermination and prevention isn’t possible. In these cases, the focus must turn to incident response where network forensics is key. Determining the scope of the damage, followed by remediation and fortification is where network forensics and Solera Networks’ solutions are self-evidently crucial.

While most companies have a host of threat deterrents-including firewalls, anti-virus, IPS, SIEM, or DLP platforms—these tools can only protect against known threats, leaving systems and networks vulnerable to malware like Conficker, which had not been seen until recently. That is why these tools fail to report on a breach 96 percent of the time, according to research conducted by the 2008 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report. The Solera Networks DS Series solutions help companies replay network traffic when an anomaly is detected and provide precise visibility into where and when a breach occurred and how it affected connected systems. Using the unique Negative Day Threat Detection™ capability, companies can go back in time, identify, remediate, and fortify the network more quickly and effectively; reducing the work by valuable IT resources and mitigating further risk and exposure. Only the Solera Networks DS Series solutions can capture and replay network traffic on today’s fastest physical and virtual networks.

“This award further solidifies Solera Networks’ distinction as a leading innovator in the emerging field of network forensics,” said Shillingford. “We are grateful for this recognition and look forward to helping organizations of all sizes improve their overall security posture with the effective use of this technology.”

Enabling Negative Day Threat Detection

Solera Networks’ CTO Joe Levy to Speak at ISS World Americas Conference 2008 on Enabling Negative Day Threat Detection

LINDON, UT —November 19, 2008 – Solera Networks, a provider of innovative network forensics software and search appliances, today announced that the company’s CTO, Joe Levy, will speak at the ISS World Americas Conference 2008 in Washington, DC. ISS World covers intelligence support systems for lawful interception, criminal investigations, and intelligence gathering. It is the world’s largest such meeting of North and Latin American telecom operators, law enforcement personnel, and intelligence and Homeland Security analysts.

Levy’s presentation, “Which Would You Prefer: A Myopic Witness’ Testimony, Or A Full Digital Recording Of The Scene Of The Crime?,” takes place December 9th from 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. He will detail the need for negative day threat detection – the identification of malware that entered the network undetected before a patch or signature file was applied – through complete network traffic capture. He will also discuss how to acquire and process the most complete and thorough information from a digital crime scene.

Levy will help attendees understand that when a security incident happens, incident response and analysis should not depend on evidence gathered by the security solutions- because the shortcomings of that evidence are what permitted the incident to occur in the first place. Looking at metadata from logs and audit trails will only provide superficial evidence. Security professionals need the ability to capture, record, and replay every unabridged network event to quickly understand the cause of a security incident. Historical traffic analysis takes the place of spending days, weeks, or months concentrating on the “information about the information,” the typical path taken today.

Prior to Solera Networks, Levy served as CTO of SonicWALL where he guided the company through many defining moments. Levy is a recognized specialist and author on network security issues, who constantly drives innovation for Solera Networks. His well-known, “Worth a Glance” blog covers Levy’s look at a broad range of network security news, issues and trends at http://blog.illurity.com.

George Hoyem Joins the Solera Networks Board of Directors

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Solera Networks, a provider of innovative network forensics solutions, today announced industry veteran and Managing Director of Blueprint Ventures, George Hoyem, has joined the company’s Board of Directors.

LINDON, UT—October 21, 2008 – Hoyem’s involvement speaks to the unique nature of and potential for Solera Networks’ technology in the burgeoning market for new network forensics solutions designed to support both physical and virtual environments.

“I think of Solera Networks as having a ‘TiVo®’ for the network that is in fact the only way to know the unknown when it comes to network security,” said Hoyem. “Since today’s leading security tools only identify known threats, companies need the ability to capture a complete record of their network traffic. This makes it easier to quickly identify and minimize the effects of the next unknown threats when they hit. Solera Networks has carved out a unique place in network forensics with platform agnostic solutions that complement existing security tools in both physical and virtual environments. This value proposition will become increasingly powerful in today’s troubling economy and threat environment as CIOs and National Security Agencies work to maximize and protect their current IT assets.”

Solera Networks will leverage Hoyem’s diverse technical expertise and longstanding history in starting, funding and shaping successful high-tech start-ups. Solera Networks Capture Stack™ provides unlimited context to network security and compliance toolsets through simplified software stack optimized for OEMs

NEW YORK, NY (Interop)—September 17, 2008 – Solera Networks, a provider of innovative network forensics software and search appliances, today announced the Solera Networks Capture Stack, the company’s core, award-winning capture technology, is now available to network security and monitoring tool OEMs for immediate use. In addition, the company announced that several OEMs are already integrating the technology. The Capture Stack allows anyone to integrate context and time into their existing network management and security products. As many early adopters have realized, all existing toolsets fail at anticipating the unknown event that poses a performance or security threat. When context is paired with these tools, they comprise a powerful and often, failsafe, solution for protecting corporate networks. With Solera Networks’ software-based solution, this integration is now a reality for the enterprise. The combined solutions offer the most comprehensive network forensics solution on the marketplace today.

As the only software-based network forensics platform capable of working in both virtual and physical networks at unmatched speeds, Solera Networks is unique in its ability to offer an OEM version of its technology in software form. Only the Solera Networks Capture Stack provides unlimited portability and integration with other networking and security tools, such as firewalls, UTM, IDS/IPS, DLP, SIEM, switches, or log analyzers. The stack can be deployed as a dedicated appliance tuned for capturing at full line-rate on 10Gb networks, or on readily available server hardware, or as a virtual appliance.

“This is a logical step for Solera Networks and this market,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “We want to give every network a fail-proof memory that will help them quickly get to the root cause of a problem. What we don’t talk enough about in our industry is protection from the unknown. We see this as a simple problem solved. Similar to the layered security approach we see in our physical world, having an ‘always-on’ monitoring tool that is invisible to detection, capable of storing event histories, making that history as easy to search as using Google™, and replaying any event of interest is just good practice. And since our technology is not restricted to hardware deployments, we are unique in our ability to make this available to the rest of the industry. Fortunately, we have seen several early adopters who get it.”

End customers will gain the ability to access the actual, high-speed network traffic that occurred around the time of a network alarm, which gives greater context to the alert and allows for reduced mean-time-to-resolution (MTTR) forensic analysis and identification of the real threat or vulnerability, not just symptoms of an event or correlated analysis. The amount of network traffic captured by the Capture Stack can scale to accommodate any capture and storage need. Companies that are implementing Solera Networks capture technology into their solutions, include:

Exact Solutions – Incorporates lossless capture into iReplay™, the first full-scale SQL Workload Capture & Replay solution for all major databases. With iReplay, organizations can accurately test changes by re-creating their actual production workloads, effectively eliminating the gap between simulated tests and real-world conditions. Inspekt Security™ – the cloud-based SIEM company – includes Inspekt Network Replay, which automatically provides a PCAP file of network traffic before and after their InspektOne™ SEIM solution generates an event alert, adding context to alerts for comprehensive forensic analysis. LogIT – Japanese-based provider of monitoring, IDS, and email forensics analysis solution now provides full context to any generated alert using deep packet capture, enabling in-depth interrogation and discovery. (www.logit.co.jp)

Additionally, Solera Networks and Cymphonix™ are working to extend forensic capabilities to the Cymphonix Network Composer™, as well to leverage Cymphonix’s extensive deep packet scanning intelligence into Solera Networks’ packet classification index. (www.cymphonix.com)

Solera Networks is working with OEMs in a variety of ways to integrate the solution, including full integration, bundling arrangements and the offering of the technology as a virtual appliance or an add-on.
