Introducing Solera DS SAN™, powered by EMC™, for active network forensics.

San Francisco, CA — March 2, 2010 – Solera Networks, a leading network forensics products and services company today announced its partnership with EMC Corporation, a worldwide leader in flexible, scalable, and secure information infrastructures. The companies’ technologies will create a network forensics storage solution to meet the growing needs of Fortune 1000 companies and government institutions.

Today’s threats target enterprise and government networks using tactics that are achieving a new level of sophistication and will remain undetectable by current signature-based security tools. Operation Aurora that targeted Google™ and other prominent organizations, and recent ZeuS botnet variants, are recent examples of these threats. Network forensics products like Solera Networks are the only solution to defend against unidentified, persistent threats to the network. Enterprises need the ability to store data in a single scalable location, with redundancy built in, without sacrificing instant access to that data. There has been a barrier to providing these critical elements and maintaining lossless capture on today’s high-speed networks.

The Solera DS SAN solution, powered by EMC, breaks the single-system storage barrier by providing incident responders instant assess to the full detail of historical network activity in up to one petabyte of captured network data. Unlike competitive solutions, which require the use of multiple standalone systems to scale to the needs of modern networks, DS SAN simplifies and consolidates hardware deployments while reducing management costs. DS SAN is available immediately in configurations starting at 100 TB of capture storage for network speeds ranging from 100 Mbps through 10 Gbps.

“EMC is the industry leader for enterprise storage solutions,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “As we are becoming the most recommended and requested network forensics solution for large enterprise and government, customers are asking for even larger windows of captured network traffic and the ability to sift through terabytes of data for specific details of any security event. Combined with EMC, we deliver a network surveillance platform for effective incident response that can scale to the needs of any organization.”

A key component of Solera Networks technology is Solera DSFS™, the groundbreaking custom-built file system designed to achieve 10 Gbps network capture while offering instant access to any packet of information that has traversed the network. Combined with EMC storage solutions, Solera DS SAN breaks the high-speed capture barrier that other technologies are unable able to overcome.

Unmatched technology leads to more than double bookings, focus in government and enterprise market

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — December 8, 2009 – Solera Networks, a leader in the rapidly growing network forensics market, has achieved unprecedented growth in 2009 and released a significant upgrade to its award-winning platform. Solera Networks has rapidly become one of the most recommended and requested network forensics solutions by organizations demanding high-performing, scalable and reliable security for complex high-speed networks. The company will more than double its bookings in 2009 and will continue to invest in 2010 to meet the growing demand from government and enterprise customers.

Network forensics is quickly gaining interest from enterprise and government network security professionals who realize that prevention alone is not sufficient to defend against the latest security threats. Preparation for swift incident response is key.

“The sophistication and complexity of targeted attacks have increased the need for capabilities to replay and investigate potentially malicious network traffic,” said John Pescatore, Gartner VP. “This allows enterprises to both more quickly react to suspected events and to proactively tune network security platforms to prevent future attacks.”

To help security professionals actively identify the full source, context and scope of a security incident within any network, Solera Networks has unveiled Solera OS 4.0, the latest version of its flagship product that provides comprehensive active network forensics solutions for instant response when a security incident occurs.

“When we talk with our customer base and prospects, it is clear that other vendors are unable to address the needs of complex high-speed networks in an all-in-one, consolidated solution,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “Networks aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Organizations are realizing that they can only analyze what they can see, index and store. The Solera OS 4.0 network forensics platform is like a 24-hour surveillance camera on your network, recording and cataloging every event, even on today’s ultra-fast 10Gb networks. It allows customers to search all the traffic and identify the source, cause and extent of any network security breach.”

With networks increasing in size and speed, the ability to record all network traffic in real-time and at high speeds is essential for effective incident response today, and into the future. Version 4.0 of Solera OS not only improves the platform’s record-setting performance, but also includes Solera DeepSee Forensics Suite™, which indexes all captured network traffic, delivers detailed interactive reports and allows intuitive navigation for easy search and discovery. This complete historical record of all traffic, even on the fastest networks, enables security professionals to move from complex ‘incident response’ to ‘instant response’ for any security event, thus mitigating future risk. Most recently, the platform’s performance was put to the test at SC09, where Solera Networks was exclusively asked to test their product using real traffic at speeds reaching sustained bursts of 9 Gbps.

In addition to solid sales growth in the past year, Solera Networks is partnering with multiple security industry leaders, Solera Networks recently announced that the company’s network forensics appliances will integrate with ArcSight’s enterprise threat and risk monitoring solutions.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — November 10, 2009 – Solera Networks has partnered with ArcSight, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARST) to enable integration between their high-speed network forensics appliances and ArcSight’s enterprise threat and risk monitoring solutions. This integration will help determine the true scope of any network or security issue by providing a record of network traffic and replay capabilities to event notifications.

“We have a number of customers who rely on ArcSight to perform valuable security event notification and management,” said Peter Schlampp, VP of Marketing and Product Management. “Integration of Solera DS network forensics appliances with the ArcSight Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platform will give them automated full-fidelity replay of any network event notification, helping them determine the true scope of the entire event for swift remediation.”

ArcSight is a leading global provider of security and compliance management solutions that protect enterprises and government agencies. ArcSight has taken a leadership role in the security industry by developing a log management standard that SIEM vendors, customers and partners can leverage to develop their own valuable innovations in security technology.

“In order to reduce the risk posed by targeted threats, organizations need to be able to quickly determine the scope and nature of a network event,” said Jeff Scheel, senior vice president of business development at ArcSight. “The forensic solutions from Solera Networks provide clearer context through traffic capture and replay. Adding these capabilities to the ArcSight SIEM platform broadens the scope of tools available for fighting cyber crime and managing enterprise risk.”

Solera DS forensics appliances capture all network traffic, even on today’s fastest 10Gb networks. The available REST web services APIs will allow ArcSight’s threat and risk monitoring solutions to deliver automated requests to Solera DS forensics appliances for slices of network traffic. These slices can be based on time, protocol, source/destination port and many other network parameters.

The Solera Networks appliance sits passively on a network, records all network traffic, indexes all traffic, and provides complete searching and replay of any event with its associated artifacts.

White Wolf Security selects Solera Networks to provide network forensics solutions to security training exercises

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — October 19, 2009 – With recent cyber attacks targeting federal agencies responsible for the protection of the American people, the need for cyber security is higher now than ever before. Cyber warfare training exercises and simulated cyber wars are one of the most effective ways to recruit new security talent and ensure that individuals responsible for securing government and private sector networks are prepared for cyber war when it occurs. Solera Networks, has been selected by White Wolf Security to provide network forensics solutions for these simulated exercises.

Network forensics has become a key weapon in the cyber security arsenal, enabling rapid response in the event of a breach or attack. Acting like a camera in a bank, when a cyber attack occurs, network forensics solutions provide a complete record of all network activity to help determine the point of entry for the breach, what was affected, what data was compromised and the party that was responsible, often within hours.

White Wolf Security, the leading organizer of live cyber warfare exercises, works hard to ensure that the latest and most advanced technologies are available to its participants. So when it needed a network forensics solution, it turned to Solera Networks for its proven network forensics appliances. Solera Networks, the leading provider of network forensics solutions, was selected because only their appliances could handle the rigorous requirements of capturing all of the network data from a live cyber war.

Only Solera Networks DS Appliances can capture and record all network traffic at 10Gb speeds (as certified by Miercom Labs). This ensures a complete historical record of all network traffic, even on today’s fastest networks. Solera Networks also offers a software-only version of its appliance for virtual environments and easy transport. Both of these features are essential for White Wolf Security, which conducts security training exercises across the globe and needs the ability to capture all traffic across the networks of multiple participating teams.

“At White Wolf Security we pride ourselves on providing the most realistic and intensive cyber security training experience for our participants,” said Tim Rosenberg, President and CEO of White Wolf Security. “Network forensics is an increasingly important part of quickly identifying and remediating security events. We selected Solera Networks for our exercises because they offer the only network forensics devices that can handle the immense amount of traffic generated during these events, and the only solutions that fulfill our flexibility needs.”

Solera Networks appliances have been field tested in multiple security training events prior to being officially selected as the network forensics appliance of choice. In past events, the Solera Networks appliances have become a vital tool for teams to indentify the true scope of an attack, better understand how to defend against ongoing threats, and also to provide evidence to the law enforcement team.

“A recent study that we conducted showed 85 percent of respondents either have experienced, or expect to experience a security incident in the next 36 months, and most expect for it to take 2 to 10 days or more to determine the scope of an incident,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “White Wolf Security’s security training exercises are a necessary tool, teaching participants how to quickly and efficiently gauge the scope of an attack to enable swift response.

Most companies do not have the capability to determine the full scope of security incidents

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — October 1, 2009 – Solera Networks, the leading provider of network forensics products and services, and Trusted Strategies, a research and advisory firm focused exclusively on information security, have released the results of a survey on network forensics. The survey found that an overwhelming number of companies have recently experienced or expect to experience a significant network security breach within the next 36 months.

While many survey respondents believe incident response is necessary; most do not have the capabilities to determine the full scope of an incident when it occurs. This is daunting, given that 75 percent of the respondents believe that an attack will have a significant impact on their company brand and reputation.

According to Jim Finley, former Deputy under Secretary of Defense for acquisition and technology and respondent to the survey, “Most enterprise security budgets are allocated almost entirely for prevention. Very little is set aside for response, so when an incident does happen most companies tend not to be as prepared as they ought to be.”

Over 200 individuals participated in the survey. All belonged to organizations with at least 1,000 network nodes and either managed or were directly involved in the maintenance of their organization’s computer networks. Highlights of the findings include:

More than 85 percent of respondents have either had a major network incident in the past 36 months or expect to have a major incident in the coming 36 months

Over 75 percent of the survey participants agreed that a major security incident has a significant impact on the company’s brand and reputation

Nearly half of the respondents say that when an attack occurs, it can take two to 10 or more days to determine the full scope of the incident

Ninety-two (92) percent of respondents believe that it is important to have network forensics capabilities that can capture and record all network traffic; yet only 28 percent were very familiar with network forensic solutions

While 76 percent feel that they need to do more and their organization would benefit from more incident response tools, about half of the respondents spend less than 25 percent of their overall security budget on incident response and a fourth don’t have an effective incident response plan in place

“In 2008, more than 285 million records were compromised,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “That number is staggering, and it’s only from 90 confirmed breaches. T-Mobile, Pepsi, Merrill Lynch and American Express are just a few companies that have been under attack and have experienced an impact to brand reputation and trust. It demonstrates that despite the many prevention tools that are in place, a breach is inevitable. Companies that want to quickly respond and remediate must have a comprehensive network forensics solution in place for incident response.”

Ray Owen, Defense/intelligence cybersecurity executive and advisor, said, “Management needs to understand that mounting an effective response to an attack requires real-time knowledge of what is happening across their networks. The industry needs the tools to help us do that quickly.”

Solera Networks’ Government Organization Deployment Selected as a Winner in the Forensics Solution Category

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – September 15, 2009 – Info Security Products Guide, the industry’s leading publication on security-related products and technologies, has named Solera Networks’ deployment for a major government organization as the winner of the 2009 Best Deployment Scenario Awards in Network Forensics.

This prestigious award recognizes security vendors with advanced, ground-breaking security solutions that are helping set the bar higher for others in all areas of information security. This deployment at a large government agency was selected because it is a real world solution deployment that is making the most positive impact on security in today’s highly sophisticated and blended attacks environment.

Solera Networks’ DS 5150 10Gb forensics appliance allows the government organization to identify the source of a security event in less than three hours. Solera Networks’ network forensics solution is a significant contrast to the prior system which, in the event of security breach, took 51 hours to track where malware got in, where it went and the extent of its impact throughout the organization. To read more about this winning case study, please visit http://www.infosecurityproductsguide.com/casestudies/.

“The most effective way for security solution vendors to prove their capabilities and continued commitment to solving security needs is through successful deployments,” says Rake Narang, editor-in-chief, Info Security Products Guide. “Solera Networks successful government agency deployment allows them to more effectively identify where a security breach occurred, how it occurred, what information was affected and who was responsible.”

“Info Security Products Guide’s recognition of this deployment further validates the overwhelmingly positive impact of deploying network forensics into existing security environments,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “Solutions that deliver this magnitude of a return have been the key to our customer’s success in overall network fortification. We’re pleased to receive this award.”

Industry veteran brings unique experience in addressing emerging needs in security

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — September 1, 2009 – Solera Networks, the leading provider of network forensics products and services, announced today the appointment of Scott Weiss to its board of directors. He recently left Cisco, where he was the Vice President and General Manager of the Security Technology Business Unit.

“While there are many interesting start-ups in the network security space today, Solera Networks’ technology is some of the most interesting I’ve seen in years and the management team has the strength and experience to make this company a huge winner,” said Weiss. “The opportunity to work with the team and provide guidance from my experience at Cisco and IronPort led me to join the board.”

Solera Networks will leverage Weiss’ proven experience in developing strong growth strategies for emerging companies. Weiss has served at many notable technology firms including Hotmail, EDS and idealab!. He was one of the early members of the Hotmail team, where he was responsible for all revenue generating business development activities and partnerships. Weiss stayed with the company after the acquisition by Microsoft and led the MSN business development unit. After leaving MSN, Weiss went on to pursue new opportunities at idealab!, where he met Scott Banister, and together the two developed the technology that eventually became IronPort.

As CEO of IronPort Systems, Weiss established the company as the leader in email security and directed the company through its successful acquisition by Cisco. After the acquisition, Weiss advanced quickly inside Cisco to lead Cisco’s Security Technology Business Unit, developing the vision and strategy for integrating reputation-based security into existing products.

“Solera Networks is similar to IronPort because it addresses a growing enterprise security need,” Weiss said. “Without network forensics, organizations are going to continue to bleed money with every new cyber attack. Each day that passes without knowing the full extent and scope of the incident, costs manpower, brand, trust and ultimately revenue.”

“Scott has a passion for the security industry and is a true technology entrepreneur,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “His experiences will bring great value to our company. We are pleased to have him on board to provide guidance as we set the stage for our growth and success in the critical network forensics market.”

Weiss’ foundation in business is built on his education at Harvard Business School and his consulting background at McKinsey & Co.
