Network Visibility Key to Network Health and Performance, Aberdeen Group Research Reveals
Organizations enhance network health and performance, avoid business disruption and optimize IT investments by monitoring and analyzing network behavior and performance
CIOs, Network administrators and those responsible for network security are recognizing it is more critical than ever to gain true network visibility, according to a new research report from Aberdeen Group titled, “The Real Value of Network Visibility,” sponsored by Solera Networks. The report serves as a roadmap for organizations that are striving to secure and manage their networks by improving network visibility. The report’s findings show that improving network visibility (particularly network activity and behavior) enables organizations to prevent application performance issues, decrease network management and operation costs, and optimize networks for new technology rollouts that support future business growth.
“Senior management is finally realizing that network administrators need help. Managing enterprise infrastructure and planning changes to the network design are becoming part of overall enterprise strategies,” said Bojan Simic, Research Analyst of Aberdeen Group. “As organizations are adopting VoIP, video and other bandwidth-intensive applications, achieving full visibility into network and application performance is more important than ever before.”
Aberdeen’s research shows that 93 percent of organizations need more visibility into, and control over, the performance of their networks. As more companies migrate to 10 Gigabit networks, realizing a reasonable return on investment for that transition is very difficult without being able to see and monitor all network traffic, particularly in managing network performance and achieving network security.
“Solera Networks has long realized the importance of network visibility, and has developed solutions to capture network traffic and then stream that traffic to long-term or short-term storage at full 10Gbps line rates, allowing absolute visibility into the network,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “This research confirms our view that as network complexity increases, the need for visibility and control increases exponentially.”
Aberdeen’s research report revealed that 87 percent of organizations reported that managing their networks has become increasingly complex over the last two years. Deeper network visibility helps organizations better leverage existing resources and more accurately identify additional resource needs in order to ensure optimal levels of network and application performance.
The Aberdeen report shows that best practices for network visibility include:
• Developing capabilities for identifying the source of a delay in application response time
• Leveraging network flow data to achieve network visibility
• Developing the ability to simulate realistic network performance in a lab environment
Aberdeen’s study examined the use, experiences and intentions of more than 200 enterprise organizations using network monitoring, network analytics and traffic simulation technologies in a diverse set of enterprises.

About Solera Networks
Solera Networks is the price-performance leader in lossless deep packet capture and stream-to-storage technology. Solera Networks’ DS Series is a line of high-performance appliances, including software-only virtual appliances, which capture, record, and archive 100% of network traffic at speeds up to 10Gbps. Captured traffic is written to a scalable, disk-based cache system and presented in multiple industry-standard formats, including PCAP, as a virtual network interface, or as regenerated network traffic. The captured data is then accessible instantly via Solera Networks’ own search, alert and archive interface, or via any standards-based security, forensics, compliance, analytics or network management application. Those applications can then perform their analysis on either live or stored data, at live, throttled or accelerated playback speeds, using sophisticated filters based on source/destination, protocol, time period and other variables, all without affecting the production network’s performance.
