Solera Networks Captures Industry Vet Joe Levy as CTO

Former SonicWALL CTO Will Drive Technology Vision

LINDON, UT-September 10, 2008 – Solera Networks, a provider of innovative network traffic capture and search appliances that record and archive a complete record of data-in-motion, today named security industry veteran Joe Levy as the company’s Chief Technology Officer. Levy, a recognized expert and author on network security issues, joined the firm from Canopy Ventures, where in his role as technologist-in-residence, he served as an advisor to Canopy’s portfolio companies, including Solera Networks.

As CTO, Levy will drive innovation and development for Solera Networks’ full line of network forensics appliances and software. With nearly 15 years of experience in the networking and network security industry, Levy is well known for guiding SonicWALL through many company-defining moments in his role as CTO. He’s participated in various industry certification and design consortiums including the ICSA and IETF, and, along with his development teams, has authored a number of networking and security patents. Prior to SonicWALL, Joe spent six years with OneNet, Inc. a telephony, networking and security integrator, where he served as vice president of technology services, directing the professional and managed services teams.

“Joe’s expertise and vision surrounding the technologies that will reshape the market now and in the future will be an invaluable asset to our team,” said Steve Shillingford, CEO of Solera Networks. “We want to give every network a fail-proof memory that will help them quickly get to the root cause of a problem, strengthen security and control damage from network failures or malicious activity. Joe is just the person to help make that goal a reality.”

Levy has recently co-authored a book with several colleagues on the topic of wireless network security, covering many of the proprietary wireless enhancements designed by Levy and the SonicWALL architectural team, as well as industry standards best-practices. His well known, “Worth a Glance” blog covers Levy’s look at a broad range of network security news, issues and trends at http://blog.illurity.com.

“After working with Steve and the team as part of my role at Canopy Ventures, I saw a real opportunity to help shape the future of this technology,” said Levy. “Solera Networks has broken new ground in the capture and retention of network data. Our goal now is to unleash the full utility of this foundation in the form of a working ‘network memory’. We have effectively transformed the nature of the network from the ethereal to the persistent, enabling real network forensics to finally become a reality. I envision this becoming a pervasive component of the security fabric, following a similar adoption path to the firewall over the last decade. Accepting that all security tools inevitably fail to recognize some unknown threat, only a system providing perfect capture and recall can ensure meaningful incident response.”
